On pronouncing my name
Hello, my actual name is Guillaume. It is pronounced /ˌɡɪj’ɔːm/ (using IPA), or ggi-yo-m in approximative English-style writing.
Now you can see this first name is typically French, as in essence you do only pronounce half the letters it contains.
Note that I don’t really like being called that; on the internet, I prefer
people using my pseudonym, krab, or krab5, or Dr Krab.
The origin of this pseudonym is quite obscure, and I think it is better if I keep it a secret (you know, to keep some mystery around my person). I must emphasize though that it does have something to do with arthropods more than with anything else.
Sometimes this pseudo is written crabe, which is the French word for crab, and
is actually pronounced crab, like in English (and not kray-b like some
people think).
This pronunciation is important to me because I want to emphasize that it has nothing to do with any fictional character from a series of novels.
Regarding my degrees and my activity
Yes, I do have a Ph.D., which according to French law gives me the right to use this title however I see fit.
In professional setting, I am required to precise that I am a doctor in computer science (i.e. not in medicine).
I conducted by doctorate work in the domain of formal methods, which is a domain I really enjoy and am still part of. Prior to that during my master, I worked in the domain of model driven engeineering, which is also a domain I like, although maybe a bit less (sorry not sorry).
I also have an engineering degree in computer science and applied mathematics. I like to think that this degree is what makes me quite hands-on despite being in a field that is often closer to abstract mathematics than it is from programming stuff.
Currently I have an academic position in a French university, something called Maître de Conférence or Lecturer (but more traditionally translated as Associate Professor, although the mechanism of tenure track does not really exist in France).
Consequently, I also teach; in particular, I teach computer science related topics in a French Grande École. I do teach a bit of formal methods and theoretical computer science, but I mostly teach software engineering, algorithmic design and general programming (in almost every paradigm there exist).
On one of the most beautiful place on Earth
As you may have already “guessed”, I am from France. I was born in the beautiful region of Lorraine (now a part of the Grand Est region or “Great Eastern Region”), in the Vosges department, beautiful piece of land at the feet of the Vosges mountains, old, magnificent, made of granite and pink sandstone, covered in beautiful pine trees and home to a wide diversity of animals and plants, honestly one of the most beautiful place on Earth.
The photo I use as splash on my home page was actually taken in the Vosges.

I am also not sponsored by the Vosges tourism industry, I simply have a deep and sincere fondness for this part of the world, probably helped by the fact I grew there.
